As of lately this has become one of my hobbies. I have designed some websites for small companies in Norway. My portfolio so far can be viewed here.
To create my sites I utilise alot of the standard programs in the business. Mostly Adobe products like Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Paint Shop and Flash CS3, but for my main site compiler i use Rapidweaver. This is a well known software amongst people that use OS X (Apple), but for windows users it is mostly unknown. Combined with the Adobe programs, Rapidweaver gives you an extremely efficient way of creating websites. In adition to these programs there are a long list of other programs that I use for special purposes. Some of them are: TextMate, CSSEdit, Pixelmator, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and BannerZest.

With an open-source alternative to the Adobe programs that I use, then you got some really powerful and non expensive tools listed above to create stunning and tasty websites. A great place to start learning programming language that is essential for creating websites is W3schools. Here you can find anything from the most basic commands to advanced features in html, php, css and alot more.
